Web app, PWA or native app?

Compare users, device capabilities, offline work, distribution and maintenance before choosing an app type.

Web apps run in browsers. PWAs can add installation and some offline capabilities where supported. Native apps can access deeper platform-specific capabilities. Test required camera, notification, offline and background behaviour on actual devices, and include distribution review and maintenance in the decision.

When to use this guide

For buyers choosing a platform for customer portals, field tools or enterprise applications.

List essential device behaviour

List camera, files, location, push, Bluetooth, offline and background needs with target environments and permissions. Similar feature labels can hide different platform support and constraints. Run a bounded feasibility test before committing the full build.

Offline work needs conflict rules

Define whether offline use is read-only or editable, retention duration and lost-device handling. Reconnection needs duplicate and concurrent-edit rules. Distinguish saved locally from successfully synchronised, and separately approve caching of sensitive records.

Compare the full lifecycle

Include device testing, store or enterprise distribution, compatibility, support and updates alongside the initial build. Native delivery does not guarantee store approval. State account ownership and release responsibilities, and assess shared components rather than assuming everything must be duplicated.

Illustrative scenario

Hypothetical choice: test a mobile web form for field photos and data entry first. If workers remain offline for long periods, compare PWA and native recovery on actual devices before selecting the architecture.

Frequently asked questions

Are PWA capabilities identical everywhere?

No. Verify current browser, operating-system and device support.

Is native delivery always quicker?

Timing depends on features, platforms, testing and distribution.

Can we start with web and add an app?

Yes. Plan shared data and interfaces without prebuilding unconfirmed app features.
